چکیده

In the inaugural issue of this journal, David Tyfield (2008) examined the connection between the economics of scientific knowledge (ESK) and the sociology of scientific knowledge (SSK). He argued that, pace Wade Hands, SSK can underwrite the claims of ESK. Indeed, for Tyfield, Hands’ argument itself is a bit stronger suggesting that SSK necessarily underwrites the claims of ESK. Consequently the weakness, or incoherence, of SSK must do great damage to any attempt to employ economics as explanatory for the development of science. Tyfield then re-presented SSK as seen by Hands, and recapitulated the reflexivity problems that were claimed by Hands to beset SSK. Tyfield argued that the issues are even more severe than Hands had suggested in 1994 and that, in particular, it is a necessary implication of SSK that it employ and commit to employing the idea of “meaning finitism”. Using some recent discussions about “meaning finitism” as it has appeared in the philosophical literatures, Tyfield concluded that SSK is an intellectually hopeless basis on which to erect an intelligible study of science.

Review times in statistical journals: tilting at windmills?

Using limited data, I argue that the review times in statistics are far too long for the field to keep pace with the rapidly changing environment in science. I note that statisticians do not appear to believe in statistics because data on the review process are not widely available to members of the profession. I suggest a few changes that could be made to speed up the review process, although ...

The art of medicine Tilting at windmills and the evidence base on injecting drug use After reading through many of the 500 or so papers on harm reduction in drug users listed in the PubMed database, it's hard not to conclude that researchers are really bad at understanding the evidence base. Paper after paper begins its introduction with a homily about the need for evidence-based policies. Pape...

Ja n 20 06 Decay to the nonequilibrium steady state of the thermal diffusion in a tilted periodic potential

We investigate asymptotic decay phenomenon towards the nonequilibrium steady state of the thermal diffusion in the presence of a tilted periodic potential. The parameter dependence of the decay rate is revealed by investigating the Fokker-Planck (FP) equation in the low temperature case under the spatially periodic boundary condition (PBC). We apply the WKB method to the associated Schrödinger ...
